Mary Gui | Dooney & Bourke

Meet Mary

Mary is the New York City fashion blogger behind Layers of Chic whose love of color, pattern, vintage and modern elements defines her fresh and original style.

What was your first Dooney & Bourke bag?
I got my first Dooney & Bourke in high school — it was a brown suede shoulder one in an oversized hobo shape. I remember loving the cute duck logo.

What are you most passionate about?
Fashion has always been my biggest passion. My interest in fashion developed from a young age when I would wear my Mom’s vintage clothes and style them in a modern way. I love being able to express myself through my style, there is nothing like the feeling of putting on a fabulous outfit.

Mary's Approach to Style

"My personal style is very feminine, colorful, and whimsical. I like to mix vintage and modern pieces, and experiment with different shapes, patterns, and silhouettes."

How does New York City inspire you?
I’m inspired by the people here — everyone comes from different backgrounds and it is fascinating to learn about different people and see their styles. I love that NYC allows me to fully express my individuality without ever feeling self-conscious or judged.

What are your favorite Dooney styles?
My favorite style currently is the Emerson North South Reese Bag. I love the equestrian inspired saddle shape and the signature Dooney buckle. I also like the Janine Satchel as it is perfect for everyday.

What do you do with your down time?
I like going to brunch, barre and cycling classes, and binge-watching Netflix. I’m pretty low-key in my down time since my job is so fast-paced and requires a lot of social events.

What are your go to spots in Brooklyn?
My favorite spot is the Swallow Café. I love getting a morning coffee and breakfast sandwich from there on the weekends. I also like Elsa for cocktails and Honeygrow for a quick meal.
